How Americano and Mexicano work
Americano: everyone partners everyone
In an Americano you change partner every round. The aim is that every player partners every other player once, and plays against as many different opponents as possible. With 8 players on 2 courts that takes 7 rounds; with 4 players on 1 court, 3 rounds; with 12 players on 3 courts, 11 rounds. Because partners keep changing, the standings are individual.
Mexicano: the standings make the pairs
A Mexicano starts like an Americano, but from round 2 the pairs come from the standings. Places 1 to 4 play on court 1, places 5 to 8 on court 2, and so on, with 1st and 4th against 2nd and 3rd. Matches get closer as the event goes on. Each round is drawn when the previous round's scores are in.
Points per match
Most Americanos play a fixed total of points instead of games, so every match ends at the same time: 16, 21, 24 or 32 points are common. Every point counts, there is no deuce, and both scores add up to the total (13–11 in a 24-point match). With 16, 24 or 32 points, rotate the serve so each of the four players serves the same number of points, for example 6 each in a 24-point match. Pick Free to enter any score.
Odd numbers and sit-outs
Each court takes four players. With 5, 6 or 7 players on one court, or more players than courts can hold, some players sit out each round. The generator rotates the sit-outs so nobody sits out twice before everyone has sat out once. In Mexicano the lowest-placed players with the fewest sit-outs rest first.
Who wins
Each player scores the points their pair won in every match. The standings sort by points, then by point difference, then by matches won. When players sit out different numbers of rounds, compare the Played column too, or plan the rounds so everyone plays the same number.
